Settlement economic structure and fiscal capacity

Developing settlement typologies from business structure data and comparing their municipal financial characteristics.

Research question

Which financial differences can be observed between settlements with different economic structures?

Research context

Local economic profiles can be associated with different opportunities to generate own-source revenue and varying fiscal constraints. The research investigates the relationship between business structure and municipal fiscal capacity.

Data and modelling

Economic structure is represented through business sector composition and size categories. Clustering methods produce settlement typologies, which are subsequently linked to municipal financial indicators.

Methodological evaluation

The groups are assessed using descriptive statistics, analysis of variance and pairwise comparisons. Interpretation distinguishes sectoral composition from other potentially relevant settlement characteristics.
